Heifer International
Heifer International is my second selection in the my “Doing Good” series.
Heifer works in many developing nations around the world (such as India, Cambodia, and the Philippines), in many areas. They specialize in agriculture-centered projects, but also have youth and HIV/AIDS programs.
They are probably most known for their livestock and sustainable agriculture initiatives. Individuals donate funds that go toward training locals in sound agricultural practices, whether that be bee keeping or tree farming or raising cattle. In addition, you can choose what exactly your donation will go toward, such as a pig or a flock of ducks. The training these people receive helps them be successful at raising healthy farm animals for their families and towns, in a way that is less impactful on the environment…there’s no sense in simply giving people livestock if they don’t know proper healthcare and husbandry.
In some circumstances Heifer also provides small micro-loans to individuals.
