Days of The Dragon

I was in the grocery store yesterday with Parker An. I’m used to a couple people making comments that he is cute, but yesterday it seemed like everyone in the store wanted to point it out. One woman came over and said "He’s so pretty…uh, I mean handsome…no boys can still be pretty at that age." I said, "oh always, boys can always be pretty. Thanks!". Our society has serious hang-ups when it comes to lines between the genders, even with something so silly as the words we use to describe attractiveness in men and women. It is just ridiculous to me that after a certain age a boy or man can no longer be "pretty", he must be "handsome" or "nice looking". B.S. A man can definitely be pretty. Some men are not handsome, but they are pretty. I mean, come on, just look at most any Abercrombie ad, if you can get past the blatant selling of clothes with sex, then you might realize that at least half of the men in their ads are not particularly handsome, but they are what I think most people would call, "pretty"…and, they should be happy about that, I sure wouldn’t mind looking like many of them, though the fact that they are all shaved smooth is a bit weird and silly in my opinion…but that’s a whole other post.

A similar line exists with color associations to gender in our country. Almost all boy clothing is blue, green, and red - and has cars, airplanes, trucks, etc on it. There is some yellow and orange thrown in, but never purple or pink - goodness forbid your male baby sees pink or purple fabric on his own body! I mean, his penis just may fall right off to reveal a secret vagina hiding below!
