Learning Vietnamese

Last week we started on book 2 of the series I’m using to learn Vietnamese. The first 1/3 or so of this book continues presenting letter combinations and the sounds they make. Then, it moves on to some grammar rules, pronouns…those kinds of things.

Last week my tutor told me my pronunciation was improving – enough so that she could actually tell what I was reading when I was reading small practice paragraphs aloud. My dấu nặng pronunciation is even improving a bit – though, still not very good when the word ends in a vowel.

My biggest obstacle at the moment is actually memorizing what various words mean. I tried putting them on flash cards, but that wasn’t really working for me. One problem with that is that my lessons are only once a week – if I was working on it more often I know I’d pick it up faster.
