Two Words Are Better Than One

It’s happened…actually, it happened a couple weeks ago right about when Parker hit 19 months – he’s started putting words together. So far they all have to do with going somewhere or sleeping. Such as daddy bye-bye or grandpa night-night.

Parker has always been interested in books, but in the last 2-3 weeks he has really become close to obsessed at times. At bed time we always looks through a few picture books – he loves to point and either say what it is or ask me by saying “this?”. I have started writing the Vietnamese for things in the picture books – and, one night I do them in English and the next in Vietnamese. He’s started being able to point out colors and knows blue and red, with the others coming a little slower.

It’s very interesting to me that for a few words Parker uses the Vietnamese words almost exclusively…even though English is obviously what he hears 95% of the time. For instance, when it rains he uses the Vietnamese word and also for airplane. He has also moved from calling me daddy almost 100% of the time to now calling me “ba” sometimes, too.

He is also very cognizant of things he is not supposed to do. For instance, he will point to the remote control on the couch and say, “no, no”. He also lets you know when things go wrong with a properly inflected “uh-oh” or “oh no!” – he conveniently forgets the difference between an accident when an “uh-oh” is appropriate and throwing something on the floor and then saying “uh-oh”, as if he has no idea that he just threw it on the floor. It’s actually hilarious, and he sometimes does it on purpose b/c he knows it makes me giggle.

I haven’t started on any kind of toilet training, but for the past few weeks Parker has been waking up with a dry diaper…and, will sometimes agree he needs a diaper when he’s pooped. So, I think I’ll start sitting him on the toilet more often to see if he’s interested in using it.

Hi Jonathan-just a few more days for us before our son will be ours! Just to let you know, some local Vietnamese girls told us that most babies here say father or Ba as their first word- the majority according to these girls- because its so easy to pronounce! Ill send you a link to our Flickr album next week. Bon weekend, Jana
