Church and a Haircut

Odd title for my blog, I know!

This past weekend was nice – we kicked it off Friday night with a nice birthday bash for my mom’s 60th. We got a private room at a very nice restaurant and had lots of fun.

Saturday was a lazy day, mostly just hanging out at home and playing. I had my Vietnamese lesson, as usual, in the afternoon. That went well – we’re closing in on the end of the second workbook. Not sure what we’ll do after that, but I’d like to move onto conversation so I can start talking in Vietnamese to Parker more than I do. He’s doing great – he’s got all the numbers down, most of the colors, and many animals, too.

Sunday was also mostly a lazy day – but we did go to the Vietnamese church in the afternoon. Parker was restless for much of the service – though, about 30 minutes in all the kids go to the playroom and play together. He took a while to warm up, but enjoyed it. I had a couple nice conversations with one of the women helping to watch the kids. Beside the general oddity that being in a Christian church is for me (Christian church isn’t odd – just me being there), I had one particular point when I was not sure what to do. I’ve been to churches before – with friends or for weddings, etc…so, it’s not a new experience, but I’m always unsure how much to put in the little collection box they pass around. We don’t do this in Judaism, so I’m not familiar with the custom. I tried to see what other people were putting in, but everyone folds it up so you can’t tell. I put in $3 – was I being cheap? I’m not a member and only attend every now and then, and pretty much only so Parker can be around Vietnamese people and play with Vietnamese kids. I also enjoy the people, but we’re not there for any religious content is what I’m saying.

Monday night I gave Parker a haircut with the clippers; it’s very short, and I think very cute – perfect for summer. Last time I did this Parker didn’t really resist or care, he just wanted it done so he could play some more. This time was a different story. He was afraid of the clippers and kept hiding whenever I tried to get him to sit down so I could do it. I turned to trying to show him that the clippers were safe and not going to hurt him. I spent 15 minutes “using” the clippers on various household items, myself, Parker’s cars, the rug, etc…before he relented and let me do his hair. I don’t have a picture yet, but will post some later in the week!
