You Can Do Better, JCICS

Posted on: Friday, May 23rd, 2008 in: Adoption

Much has been made about the JCICS proposal/plea to the US and VN governments to find a way to keep adoptions from Viet Nam from ending, and with them certain forms of humanitarian aid. You can see info on the proposal here: http://jcics.org/Vietnam.htm
I support the aims of the proposal. It doesn’t help anyone to end [...]

Very Ready for the Weekend

Posted on: Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 in: Adoption, Home Life, Parenting, Travel

This weekend I am going to Columbus for Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Parker and I are going to the Columbus Asian Festival with my sister and her boyfriend. I am staying on the OSU campus at the Blackwell hotel, and I can’t wait to do two things (besides the Asian Festival) - walk around [...]

Ethica

Posted on: Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 in: Adoption, Doing Good

My next selection for my Doing Good series is Ethica.
Ethica is an organization that works fervently for ethics in adoptions, both domestically and internationally.
I could say lots about Ethica, but their own About page does it best.

They are currently holding a fundraiser so that they can continue to help adoptive families, and work toward ethical [...]

One Year

Posted on: Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 in: Adoption, Vietnam

And, one year ago today we officially became a family!
In some ways it’s like Parker has always been there, and like it was so long ago that I went to Viet Nam. But, in other ways it feels like it was just yesterday. It’s certainly been the best year of my life.
A picture from just [...]

The First Meeting

Posted on: Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 in: Adoption, Vietnam

I’ve never shared these photos outside of our family - but, to celebrate one year since I met my son I am posting a couple of the pictures from that day, today. He is 4 1/2 months old in these photos.
I remember that day so well. I held Parker An for a long time, and [...]

The Other Orphanages

Posted on: Monday, May 12th, 2008 in: Adoption, Travel, Vietnam

One year ago today was the day before I’d go meet my son-to-be for the first time. This was the day I arrived in Da Nang, from Sai Gon. I had the privilege to visit two other orphanages that my agency works in. Here are a few pictures from that day.
I was really touched by [...]

Leaving on a Jet Plane…or Two or Three

Posted on: Friday, May 9th, 2008 in: Adoption, Travel, Vietnam

Last year I was about to leave Cleveland for the most awesome journey I could ever imagine. On May 9, 2007 I left for Viet Nam - for my then son-to-be. Some pictures I took while at the various airports that I stopped at from Cleveland to Sai Gon.
The two posts I made last year [...]

To Viet Nam: With Love, Sorrow, and Anger

Posted on: Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 in: Adoption, Vietnam

Whoa! This is so much longer than I originally intended it to be - which probably means it’s not very well organized and has some run-on issues and some disjointedness, maybe even some contradictions - but hey this stuff is a conglomeration of several very gray issues. Sorry, I’m not a writer
The AP [...]

Why Would You Lose Hope?

Posted on: Friday, April 4th, 2008 in: Adoption, Miscellaneous, Parenting

I have trouble understanding people losing hope in the current adoption situation.
As I said in a previous post, the current situation is definitely uncertain and tenuous and stressful and emotional. But, it is not a time to lose hope. It is a time to push on and work to make progress. I have been in [...]
